Oct-Nov-Dec Timeline

We're thinking of providing exercises, writing prompts, and exercises for outlining for our upcoming novels in October, doing the actual writing throughout the month of November, and providing tips for editing first drafts in December. Let us know if this timeline works for you or if you're interested in another timeline!

Write-Ins and Local Gatherings

Since this is all happening so fast, we're not sure how we will approach organizing local writing groups, but we know that this was vital to many people's process each year during the month of November! We are entertaining the idea of doing virtual write-ins for our whole community, but we're still exploring how to go about helping each of you find local writers to potentially complete this challenge with.

Let us know how important this feature is to your November experience, and of course, if you have suggestions, we're listening!

October Writing Prompts

October 1: One Dream

Write about one thing you DREAM of happening for you this October. One of those too-good-to-be-possible dreams.

We’ll incorporate that into your character’s story later!

In the comments, feel free to share what you wrote for today or just your word count!

October 2: Turn of the Season

For your next story/poem/play/novel, choose the season you'd like to set it in! Imagine sitting outside and letting yourself take in the sights, smells, and sounds. Freewrite for at least a few paragraphs or a page, more if you are up to it! Details like this will be important to the backdrop of your story!

And if you're an Autumn like me, and it's not raining, go out and sit for your writing session! Or sit in the rain and voice record your free write!

October 3: Unique Movements

Think today of a social character you want to include, and focus on how they move. What's unique about your character's movements and mannerisms?

In the comments, please share what you wrote and/or your word count!

October 4: Character in the Quiet

Look at your main character today. Specifically, who are they and what do they do when there is downtime? If they are sitting in a chair looking out the window, is their mind racing? Are they itching to scroll through their phone? Are they content? This is one of my favorite ways to dig into how a character thinks and behaves and fixates on what is important to them, by removing all other points of distraction.

In the comments, please share what you wrote and/or your word count!

October 7: Main Character Spaces

Think today of one or two of your main character's primary settings: their bedroom, office, etc. You can use these settings as containers for key moments in your story!

October 8: Villainous Spaces

Now that you've thought about your main character's main space, think about your villain's. Do they literally lurk in a cave or behind the bushes? Do they seem pretty normal in their nice house and traditional job? You need somewhere to house all of your villain's wicked thoughts and plans!

October 9: Representation Matters!!

This is an important one: Think today of the role of representation in your future novel. Women, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, neurodivergent, disabled... Are you creating a representative main character? Flat side characters? A problematic protagonist? Think on it!
