- [Variations On 'Joy is Not Made to Be a Crumb': Poem of the Month #10](https://litshark.com/product/variations-joy-not-made-be-crumb-poem-month-broadside/) - Amidst all of the wonderful submissions we received, including our Honorable Mention, I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s November Poem of the Month contest is Doug Van Hooser, who writes stunning nature poems. I have a huge soft spot for poetry that in some way converses with other poetry, and I also have a huge soft spot for Mary Oliver, so finding a poem that checked both of those boxes felt like winning some kind of poetic lottery. Doug’s poem, “Variations on ‘Joy Is Not Made to Be a Crumb,'” is in response to Mary Oliver’s poem, “Don’t Hesitate,” which ends with the phrase, “Joy is not made to be a crumb.” It’s a gorgeous, arresting poem about the importance of not waiting to live your life, living in the moment, and seeking out the glimmers – the tiny rays of joy and hope in our everyday lives. True to Doug’s form, it stunningly captures natural elements, birds, and windchimes, and carries images inside it all throughout the winter, ready for spring. I’m so glad it found a home at Lit Shark Magazine. For each contest, the winner will receive a unique digital broadside of their winning poem, and the one I created can be found below. When I read this poem, I knew immediately that I wanted to imagery to center around flowers, birds, and/or windchimes, but I wanted to create something that was visually striking and surprising, to mirror the pleasant surprises listed throughout this poem. These flowers feel like they’re growing out off of the page to me, and against that stark, slate blue, they remind me of beauty, surprise, and joy popping up from anywhere. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
- [One Eccentric Owner: Poem of the Month #9](https://litshark.com/product/one-eccentric-owner-poem-month-broadside/) - Amidst all of the wonderful submissions we received, including our Honorable Mention, I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s October Poem of the Month contest is Lauren K. Nixon, who writes incredible, visceral, emotional, and sometimes spooky poetry. Her winning poem, “One Eccentric Owner,” offers an amazing duality between imagining that strange person who lives alone in a house and everyone in town has heard spooky stories about them, and the memories and energies people often talk about feeling attached to an abandoned house. This is one of those poems that is such a great example of the interpretation of the poem depending on the person reading it. I can read the poem and think of the eerieness of a long-abandoned house and all of its creaks, groans, and settling sounds, but I can also read a lot more into it and imagine feeling into the space and the lingering memories and vibes of who used to live there. I love poems like this that can be visited in different ways at different times. I’m so glad it found a home at Lit Shark Magazine. When I read this poem, I loved reading it, both, as an abandoned space that has that strange, long-neglected, long-alone feeling, but I also love the haunted vibes that it gave off of memories attached to the space or even the space being alive of its own accord (you know, spooky vibes!). I especially loved the final two stanzas, which really leaned into the aging and possible alive-ness of the space, and I wanted to emulate that in some way through a space that is being taken over by something that is alive – like vines. I loved this particularly visceral green, and that shade really spoke to how Lauren’s poetry always makes me feel. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
- [Today's Morning: Poem of the Month #8](https://litshark.com/product/todays-morning-poem-month-broadside/) - Amidst all of the wonderful submissions we received, including our Honorable Mention, I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s September Poem of the Month contest is Ursula McCabe, who writes thoughtful, visceral, and blatantly beautiful poetry. Her winning poem, “Today’s Morning,” is a gorgeous example of a poem throwing you into a moment. This poem beautifully captures a fall day, the brilliance, falling, and crispness of the leaves, and the sunlight cutting through the remaining leaves and tall branches of a sycamore tree. It’s a beautiful poem about time passing, being in the present, and enjoying every moment, and it’s an irreplaceable edition to Lit Shark Magazine. For each contest, the winner will receive a unique digital broadside of their winning poem, and the one I created can be found below. When I read this poem, I was thrown back to my life growing up in the Midwest, specifically into its burnt orange, red, and yellow skies between the leaves fell in mounds, and the corn stocks foiled and gnarled, ready to be plucked. More importantly, this poem felt like a moment and reminded me of the importance of being present and appreciating every moment we have, as life is not guaranteed. Though those feelings cannot totally be captured visually, I wanted to focus on the beauty of the moment captured in the poem and suggest time passing through the falling of leaves. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
- [There Is a Beautiful Creature: Poem of the Month #7](https://litshark.com/product/there-is-a-beautiful-creature-poem-month-broadside/) - Amidst all of the wonderful submissions we received, including our three Honorable Mentions, I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s July-August Poem of the Month contest is Carolyn Martin, who writes beautiful, imagistic, and at times heart-wrenching poetry. Her winning poem, “There Is a Beautiful Creature…,” which launches off from Hafiz’s “There is a beautiful creature living in a hole you have dug,” takes this concept and walks it in another, more realistic direction. Where Hafiz’s poem toys with the idea of the creature literally still living and not wanting to come out, despite the persona’s love for them, Carolyn’s poem follows a persona who comes across the remains of what they later deem a beautiful creature. After looking at their bones, and imagining the shape of their body and how beautiful their body must have looked while in motion, while alive, they cannot help but see the beauty in the late creature and celebrate the life that was once lived. It’s such a gorgeous, thoughtful, and yes heart-wrenching poem, and for those like me who honor The Day of the Dead, All Saints’ Day, or otherwise perform other practices to celebrate life and memories of life, I have no doubt you’ll find a little bit of “home” in this poem just like I did. When I read this poem, I thought back to my childhood of finding foxes, raccoons, opossums, and deer, and also reveling in the beauty of the ones that were living and didn’t know I was watching (or more than likely, knew but didn’t mind). I think there’s a beautiful duality between the gruesomeness and grief of death with the beauty of what/who lived first, with memories left behind to grieve. With all of that in mind, I leaned into trying to represent the beauty and memorialization of nature and life passing. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
- [Meadowlark, Walt, Me; Poem of the Month #6](https://litshark.com/product/meadowlark-walt-me-poem-month-broadside/) - I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s May-June Poem of the Month contest is none other than GTimothy Gordon, who writes strikingly imagistic and intelligent poetry. His winning poem, “Meadowlark, Walt, Me,” predictably contains illusions to Walt Whitman (and when you read more of GTimothy’s work, that’s fitting!), but my favorite aspect of this poem was how the entire thing dangled on the image of the meadowlark, at first waiting and then breaking into song before the end, and it’s a beautiful journey of a poem. The connection between the persona and the meadowlark, as well as Walt, rings true, as well, as we imagine what someone else might do, and why, and how it might sound if we were to do it ourselves – a lovely call to the human-nature relationship. Though the poem is about more than the meadowlark, I loved how the poem and its most complex moments hinged on the existence of that meadowlark waiting to sing. With the coming day, the rising sun, and the shock of the meadowlark’s song against the quiet, I loved the fusion of the different shades of yellow and blue. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
- [Bones: Poem of the Month #5](https://litshark.com/product/bones-poem-month-broadside/) - I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s March-April Poem of the Month contest is none other than Megan Cartwright, who writes beautifully imagistic, striking, natural, and brief poetry. Her winning poem, “Bones,” explores not just language and the power of words but our ever-evolving identities from the time we are born and on through to adulthood. It addresses our ongoing influences and shifting knowledge, and what I loved most, the surge into what we love most, what we want for ourselves, and what we believe we deserve. Though brief, this poem impressively tackles these complex concepts of self through gorgeous imagery in the form of fonts and fish guts, and it’s a poem I see myself returning to time and time again. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. For each contest, the winner will receive a unique digital broadside of their winning poem, and the one I created can be found below. Though the poem is about more than “just” language and the evolution of self, I loved this imagery so much that I wanted to emulate an expansion from the mind, blossoming and growing into something new. It’s also intentionally reminiscent, in some ways, of the very first broadside in this series, as we dive back into this project. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
- [Bioluminescence Flashes in the Pull: Poem of the Month #3](https://litshark.com/product/bioluminescence-flashes-in-the-pull-poem-month-broadside/) - I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s December-January Poem of the Month contest is none other than Sandra Noel. Accepting her poem and later choosing it as the winner felt like a full-circle moment when I discovered she was the one who wrote it (I read all of our submissions on an anonymous basis), because Sandra also submitted the very first marine/nautical-themed poem that I read and accepted for Lit Shark’s SHARK WEEK Edition issue, called “I Am the Wanting Blue,” which felt like a little confirmation for me that the issue’s theme was a good idea! Sandra’s contest-winning poem, “Bioluminescence Flashes in the Pull,” is similarly ocean-themed, and they both loosely are written from the perspective of the beach, toes practically plunging into the waves already. But where “I Am the Wanting Blue” emphasizes nature, people-watching, and how we can be reminded of love through common things and occurrences, “Bioluminescence Flashes in the Pull” focuses on something beautifully rare, something that many of us will never witness in person: the marine world aglow at nighttime with natural glow-in-the-dark matter, bioluminescent algae. The poem is this beautiful observation of the phenomenon, but it also comments on diving into the unknown, the perplexity of a dark, even opaque, ocean surface, and the wonder and pride found in diving in anyway. It’s a beautiful, brief poem that packs a lot into a short read, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I put a lot of thought and love into every broadside that I create, no matter how simple or complex they turn out to be, but it felt particularly important to create something that was as striking as a bioluminescent experience proves to be. - [Still: Poem of the Month #4](https://litshark.com/product/still-poem-month-broadside/) - I am so pleased to announce that the winner of Lit Shark Magazine’s February Poem of the Month contest is none other than Carol Edwards, who writes beautifully vulnerable, striking, ecopoetic, and imagistic poetry. Her winning poem, “Still,” follows a blue heron as it enters a body of water, and the persona is at first taken by how the heron’s reflection appears in the water, but then they start to look at how the heron looks in the larger context of water meeting sky. How many of us tried as children to discern between water/land and sky; how many of us tried to see the true horizon? This poem tackles that in a beautifully elevated way, and the imagery is all at once striking, memorable, and deeply visceral. There’s both a dreamlike quality to it as well as a photographic one, and it’s haunting in the images it calls up. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Though the poem is about more than “just” the blue heron, I loved that imagery so much that I wanted to make it the star of the show. The soft greens, blues, and other natural colors came together perfectly to represent the natural, subtle quietness of the observed, living world around us.
- [Ekphrasis for the Salmon: Poem of the Month #2](https://litshark.com/product/ekphrasis-for-the-salmon-poem-month-broadside/) - I am so pleased to announce that the winner of the contest is Shilo Niziolek, who also wrote multiple books, including Fever and atrophy, both from Querencia Press. Her winning poem is entitled “Ekphrasis for the Salmon,” and it is a stunning portrayal of coming of age, growing awareness of the self and even our place in world, and a chilling encounter with a wild salmon. The imagery is gorgeous, and its connection back to Mary Ruefle is thoughtfully executed, and the entire experience of reading it is cutting, original, jarring… and lasting. I found it to be incredible and really hope you enjoy it.
- [Ecology: Poem of the Month #1](https://litshark.com/product/ecology-poem-month-broadside/) - I am so pleased to announce that the winner of the contest is none other than Catherine Broadwall, who also wrote SHELTER IN PLACE and FULGURITE (both from Cornerstone Press, 2019 and 2023) and WATER SPELL (forthcoming from Cornerstone Press). Her winning poem is entitled “Ecology,” and it beautifully explores womanhood, artisthood, and even potential motherhood. Through surprising literary devices, images, and quarreling foxes, she breathes fresh air into tropes we’ve all thought about and perhaps even been haunted by.
